Workshop Choices - Workshop 4
Friday 10 November 2017

A Seminar: Tolerance of ambiguity: why it’s important for GP practice
Facilitated by Dr Karen Mattick

In this seminar, we will talk about tolerance of ambiguity: what it is; whether you can measure it; and why it’s important for medical practice. I’ll present research from medicine and medical education, which proposes links between tolerance of ambiguity and medical specialty choice; medical student and doctor attitudes towards patient subpopulations; early medical intervention (investigation, treatment, prescribing, referral); and mental ill-health amongst clinicians. I will encourage you, in small groups, to reflect on how ambiguity plays out in your own clinical practice and the contextual factors that impact on your own tolerance of ambiguity. I will end by sharing some of our own research in this area, including a comparison of medical and veterinary science students.
B HYPNOSIS and 5 things you can learn from it to influence your training and patients
Facilitated by Dr Toh Wong

A demonstration of hypnosis and NLP (Neurolinguistic programming) and a breakdown of the techniques used that you can use to influence your trainees – Bring an open mind and you can keep your clothes on.
C Using the Humanities in Medical Education
Facilitated by Dr David Hopes

As well as medical knowledge and skills being a good GP requires a dose of wisdom. Where do we and our trainees find this? I would argue the humanities are one excellent source.

In this workshop we’ll share some resources and look at how we may use them in our teaching and for our own enjoyment. If you have any material from the arts and humanities that you find has helped you with your practice, be it art, literature, music, poetry or any other please bring it along to share. This is not essential.
D Experiencing a Balint Group
Facilitated by Dr Juliet Campling

I have been in a Balint style peer support group for over 20 years and find it essential to understanding why I find some patients challenging. I propose to run a group using a case brought by one of the participants so I hope we can experience how a Balint group works. For anyone who is curious about such groups- or any enthusiasts who want to come and help it run well!
E Your registrar wants to do research…what do I say?!
Facilitated by Dr Willie Hamilton

I will run over the pros and cons of research as a portfolio career. The funding streams, the support and much more in an interactive environment.
F The role of the trainer in building trainee resilience
Facilitated by Dr Vik Mohan

The GP School have just launched their programme to support trainees to thrive and build their resilience. Trainers have a crucial role to play in the integration of the resilience framework into the daily work of our GP Trainees. This workshop will provide an opportunity for trainers to explore the framework and share and develop ideas and tools that can be used to enable their trainees to sustain and enjoy a career in general practice
G Teaching and Learning- Ballroom Dancing
Facilitated by Dr Richard Woollacott

This workshop focusses on how we teach and how we learn through the practice of dance, more specifically the Waltz. My aim is to have the whole group dancing around the room by the end of the session armed with a deeper understanding of how we take in new information and impart it to trainees.

Stretch your legs and learn a new skill before the end of the conference.
H Leadership with a small ‘l’
Facilitated by Dr Helen Rochester

You’ll leave this workshop armed with fabulous top tips and resources to help trainers develop leadership skills in every trainee (even those who have no intention of taking on traditional “leadership” roles!) You’ll also have a better understanding of opportunities which are available for trainees to develop their leadership skills in your surgeries and within the wider community healthcare setting.
