Workshop Choices - Workshop 2
Thursday 9 November 2017

A Seminar: Back to the Future – Hippocrates and his oath
Facilitated by Dr John Godwin

The Hippocratic Oath is universally regarded as the benchmark of medical practice from the ancient world right up to today. We will look in detail at the oath itself and also at the procedures and practices which Hippocrates used in treating patients and how relevant they might be today.
B Assessments
Facilitated by Professor Adrian Freeman

Group discussion about the understanding of assessments for trainees and how you can help them.
C GP Recruitment: looking at ways to inspire juniors into General Practice
Facilitated by Dr Helen Rogers

A summary of the current situation in GP Recruitment; looking at efforts to increase interest and applicant numbers made across the Peninsula deanery and beyond, gathering new ideas to take forward.
D Teaching Consultation Skills
Facilitated by Dr Damian Kenny

In this workshop we will consider techniques for teaching consultation skills to Registrars. We will look at a model of how people learn well, and use this to consider ways in which Educational Supervisors can enhance the learners’ learning. We will consider how we can help Registrars to develop good structure to their consultation, and practise teaching some consulting microskills.I
E Practical Teaching Skills (Ultimate Frisbee)
Facilitated by Dr Ed Fitzherbert

We will be looking at what makes a good teaching session in a very practical way. Ed plans to use teaching on how to play Ultimate Frisbee as his teaching/learning paradigm (so bring your beach footwear). This is both an opportunity to learn and to teach. If you have a skill or an interest ranging from juggling to French plaiting come along prepared to have fun, learn some skills and hopefully pass on a skill or interest of your own in a small group setting.
F Equity, efficiency and effectiveness in the NHS
Facilitated by Dr Lucinda Harris and Karen Barry

Don’t let the three letter acronyms put you off this workshop!
CCG, STP, DRSS, IFR…?? Commissioning policies, Panel and referrals LES??

How can we explain these entities to our trainees and help them (and our patients) navigate and understand the pressures facing the cash strapped NHS. Why do referral pathways exist, how can we use them to facilitate rather than hamper our consultations and our training? What are the ethical implications of all this (and how do these make for interesting and stimulating tutorials)?

We will endeavour to cover this vast topic in an interactive way with plenty of fodder to take back for tutorials and to practice colleagues!
G Using trainer skills post CCT
Facilitated by Dr Sarah Robbins and Dr Chris Cuff

This workshop aims to look at opportunities for trainers to work with doctors post CCT. Specifically supervising doctors on the Retained Doctor Scheme, and the Induction & Returner Scheme.

If there is interest from the group, we can also discuss our role with PAG (Performance Advisory Group) supporting post CCT doctors in difficulty.
