All Scholarships: Core Job Description
- Develop networking opportunities within the wider Deanery and NHSE teams and the local primary care community
- Develop a project, over the duration of the scholarship, which is written up and presented
- Attend key meetings within the GP Speciality Training programme (Patch) and the School of Primary Care
- Attendance at regular scholar meetings held quarterly and to include presenting their projects at the final meeting
- Link in with other scholars working in similar areas to ensure sharing of ideas and working when appropriate
- Keep a log of how and when their scholarship time is used and on what activity to ensure they remain within the additional time offered. This should be shared with their ES
- Promote their work to their GPST peers
- Promote their work to their training practice and local trainer’s groups
- Develop leadership and educational skills
- Develop and enhance management skills
- Gain a better understanding of the local and national position of primary care in relation to Integrated Care Systems (ICSs), Public Health and secondary care
- Support GP recruitment activity and the promotion of GP training
- Work sustainably, including sensible use of office equipment, facilities, and supplies, considering carbon expenditure when travelling, working virtually where appropriate
(a) Patch Scholarships
There will be 2 Peninsula patch scholarships available in each patch that could focus on either education or leadership.
GP ST3 (Patch) Education or Leadership Scholarship
In addition to the general aims of the scholarship programme, the purpose of this scholarship is to offer the exciting opportunity to develop educational/leadership skills working with your local patch team. We are really interested in your ideas for a scholar project within these broad themes or education or leadership.
Educational opportunities will include:
· Mentorship from an experienced member of the local TPD team
· Attendance at courses relevant to an education or leadership theme
· Opportunity to network and work collaboratively with other patch scholars working on similar topics in the region
· Attendance at relevant key meetings in the patch, and the School
· Opportunity to contribute to the annual patch QA panel
(b) Regional/Specialist Interest Scholarships
GP ST3 Central Leadership Scholarship Programme
In addition to the general aims of the scholarship programme, the purpose of this post is to offer the opportunity to develop leadership skills within the context of the NHS, particularly in relation to the work of the running of the School of Primary Care. Such skills will help equip scholars for future appointments within Primary Care Networks (PCNs), Integrated Care Systems (ICS), and the NHS as a whole.
Educational opportunities could include:
· Attendance on the HELM or a similar leadership course for clinicians
· Mentorship from an experienced senior member of the Severn/Peninsula GP School
· Attendance at key strategic meetings within the School and Deanery including the monthly Associate Dean (AD) meeting
· Leadership role within the Severn/Peninsula GPST Committee
· Coordination of annual events e.g. regional careers fair
GP ST3 Cornwall Public Health Scholarship Programme
In addition to the general aims of the scholarship programme, the purpose of this post is to offer the opportunity to develop leadership skills within the context of Public Health. Such skills will help equip them for future involvement with developing Integrated Care Systems (ICS) and Public Health within the NHS and Local Authorities (LA).
This Programme is of 3 months duration. Apart from study leave, the trainee will usually remain in full time general practice from August until March/April the following year (or equivalent if out of sync training), enabling them to concentrate on GP training and passing exams. From March/April onwards, the GP trainee will start to spend regular time in their Public Health department.
Educational opportunities could include:
· Attendance on the South-West Public Health induction course for Public Health trainees
· Direction, guidance and shadowing attachment from a Public Health Consultant based in the local LA and/or Integrated Care Systems (ICS)
· Support from the patch AD or an experienced senior member of the local TPD team
· Attendance at key strategic meetings within the local Local Authorities (LA)/Integrated Care Systems (ICS)
· Training in some core public health competencies e.g.
· Understanding of the wider determinants of health and health inequalities
· Application of principles of epidemiology
· Statistics and critical appraisal skills
· Use and interpretation of routinely available health related data
· Assessment of evidence relating to the effectiveness of health and healthcare interventions, programmes and services
· Communicable disease surveillance and control
· Working with and leading multi-disciplinary teams within and outside the NHS to develop and implement policies and strategies to improve health.

GP ST3 Research Scholarship Programme
The purpose of this post is to offer an opportunity to develop transferrable skills in understanding and engaging in research in primary care. We need enquiring doctors to know how to get good evidence of what works; to bridge the gaps between the practical needs of frontline clinicians and the projects of academic research.
There will be opportunities to build networks with the Clinical Research Network (CRN) team locally, as well as being part of PACT (Primary Care Academic Collaborative), the group nationally encouraging research engagement with newly qualified GPs and GP trainees.
The aim is to increase research capacity in primary care in the longer term by learning about and promoting primary care research early in your career. Research scholars will be supported by a local TPD mentor for pastoral, leadership and personal development.
Educational opportunities could include:
· Work with established GP researchers
· Observe and shadow established University GP Research champions
· Observe how primary care research is implemented and actively participate
· Meet with successful commercial and non-commercial research practices
· Attend the appropriate local CRN and University research meetings and other local and national meetings as appropriate
· Understand and help implement the research process in practice
· Networking opportunities with the CRN and Academic Primary Care in the region
· Investigate core research competencies including critical appraisal skills and statistics
· Learn management skills
· Engage with the RCGP, including its Clinical Innovation and Research Centre, and Research Ready eLearning modules
· Present talks and facilitate workshops to other GPs in training
